Starling Kite doesn’t come with an overdraft. Your child can only spend from the balance that you’ve set aside in their Space. In the vast majority of cases, if there isn’t enough money in the connected Space to cover your child’s transaction, it’ll be declined and you will receive a notification.
However, there are occasions where we may have no option but to allow a payment to leave your child’s Kite space despite insufficient funds. For example, a ‘Transport for London’ charge may be incurred when the transaction for the tube/train is processed ‘offline’ and there are insufficient funds in the Space.
On the rare occasion when this happens, your child’s Space may go overdrawn. Starling does not charge a fixed fee in these situations, and we'll give you the opportunity to repay the unarranged amount by 23:59 the day you go overdrawn before interest is charged.
Like with all types of Spaces, we calculate interest across your account as a whole so you’ll only be charged interest if your overall balance is below £0. You can check this amount from the interest rates screen in the app.
