You can deposit a cheque free of charge either straight through your app or via post.
Cheques up to £500 - You can deposit through app
Log into your app, click the menu, then select Add money and choose Cheque Deposit. Take a clear photo of your cheque with all information legible and you are done!
Cheques over £500 - Must be sent via post only
To post your cheque just pop it in an envelope addressed to 'Freepost STARLING' (no stamp required). Make sure to put your surname and eight digit Starling account number on the back of each cheque. Please allow a few days for us to receive the cheque via post. Time frames may vary depending on how it's sent and where it's being sent from.
What cheques do you accept?
Please note that we only accept cheques dated within the last 6 months. All cheques must be in GBP, we do not currently accept cheques in any other currency.
When will I receive my cheque payment via app?
This is normally two working days after the cheque has been deposited. Please hold on to the physical cheque until you’re sure the money has cleared (we’ll send you a push notification when that happens).
For personal, joint and sole trader accounts you can deposit up to four cheques a week through the app.
For business accounts you can deposit up to ten cheques a week through the app.
If you need to deposit more cheques than this you will need to send them via post.
What format does the name need to be in?
The name on the cheque must match the name on your account, and must include your first name or initial, as well as your surname. For example, ‘Ms A Russell’, ‘A Russell’ or ‘Alice Russell’ are valid but ‘Ms Russell’ will be rejected.
Can I deposit a cheque in a child space?
No. The cheque must be made out in the name of the main account holder. You can transfer the money to the child space once it reaches your account.
Why has my cheque been rejected?
Common reasons Starling may be unable to accept a cheque are:
- The name on the cheque must match the name on your account, and must include your first name or initial, as well as your surname. For example, ‘Ms A Russell’, ‘A Russell’ or ‘Alice Russell’ are valid but ‘Ms Russell’ will be rejected.
- The cheque must be in good condition and able to be read clearly
- Any alterations must be signed by the cheque issuer
- The cheque must be written in pen. Cheques written in pencil will be rejected
- The figures and written numbers must match
- The cheque must be dated within the last 6 months
- The cheque must be signed
Even if Starling accepts the cheque, the issuing bank may still reject it, for example, if there are insufficient funds in the account, or if the signature on the cheque doesn't match the signature on record. In this case, please ask the issuer to write you another cheque or pay you by another means.
Hours of operation
